The Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an Don Pablo Collection is a great alternative for travelers shopping around for something similar but cheaper, though it is located a 15-minute free shuttle ride from the beach. Travelers seeking something in this price range but closer to the airport may prefer the Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla, a sleek, adult-only resort with gorgeous suites, beautiful pools, and over a dozen dining options. Still, extras can be hefty, and wellness services carry a 25 percent service charge. It covers not only all drinks and food but also all minibar items, a selection of spa and fitness classes, 24-hour butler services, and even some tours. The all-inclusive package is one of the most comprehensive in the area. The vibe is also quite unique here: two of the hotel’s three pools are lively during the day, with DJ sessions, swim-up bars, whirlpools, and lots of loungers, and there are plenty of activities for guests to take part in (from tequila tastings to fitness classes), but nights are mostly quiet, with just some live music a few times per week, and an idea of fun that focuses more on drinks with friends than on long nights dancing to electronic beats. The grounds are spacious and manicured, but the property is more compact than most of its neighbors, allowing for a rather boutique-y feel despite its high room count. Ochre rugs over black tile floors, big tufted couches in gray hues or brown leather, wooden shutters, and high ceilings with exposed beams make the lobby feel immediately inviting and stylish, while sleek details such as raspberry and moss-green velvet seating, black leather booths, and wood accents lend restaurants a sophisticated vibe.
The property may look like any other luxury all-inclusive from the outside, but interiors have been carefully designed to evoke traditional haciendas with modern touches. If you’re looking for relaxation, this isn’t the right place.Set along a white-sand beach in Akumal, the UNICO 20 87 is one of the most beautiful resorts in the area. The resort is affiliated with the Hard Rock hotels (the Legacy membership applies to all) and attracts the same crowd - loud, inconsiderate and obnoxious. They then tried to withhold the spa vouchers/limit how they could be applied in retaliation. The sales associates (other than one) were hostile, rude and aggressive despite my having been clear that I wasn’t going to be interested in purchasing. After declining, we were bribed with free spa services and agreed to attend. We were also begged by text message and in person to attend the sales presentation. We had a server lie to my dad, telling him the drink he ordered was correct when they in fact served him a lesser quality beverage and expected him to not notice the difference. I had to rebook them to be told the next day that it was a mistake and our original reservations were there. On our arrival, I went to confirm our dinner reservations made in advance and was told half of them were not reserved. From our doors left open by cleaning staff to hotel electronics being stolen from our room during our stay, it was one inconvenience after another. Pros: clean, beautiful resort with good food and responsive staff.Ĭons: the beach isn’t nice, the small pools are aesthetically pleasing but get too warm in the sun and while the staff individually are very helpful and responsive, they wouldn’t need to be if the resort was run properly. Sometimes a cheaper solution would end up costing more later on. The backhaul also takes sand away from the beach. We would strongly recommend the hotel invest in the proper equipment to clean up the beach as it is a beautiful beach. We have also seen the same machine used at Banyan Tree and Andaz in Mayakoba.
Next door resort has the special machine that just rolled up the seaweeds. It doesn’t seem to be the most efficient equipment to do the job. We saw the hotel had a backhaul cleaning the seaweed on the beach. It seems that the seaweed was not cleaned for a long time that some of them are rotting and smelly. The beach is the most disappointing part of the resort. There was a sizable nail hanging on top of our balcony sliding door. The property shows its age, which is a bit surprising for an 6-year-old property. Unfortunately it doesn’t not seem to matter enough for them to give us a room that is further away from the wedding party. I specifically asked for a quiet room on my reservation and during check in. Due to a wedding on the first night, it was quite loud when we were trying to get some rest as we started our day at 3am.
